Naturally Strawsby Shaffer Farms

Farm-grown in British Columbia. Wholesale to bars, cafes, hotels, and specialty coffee operators. We know our lane — thin drinks, hot or cold — and we own it completely.

Why We Exist

Five problems.
One solution.

Naturally Straws was built to solve a cluster of interconnected problems — in the environment, in agriculture, and in public health — with a single, elegant product.

The Professional Finish — Old Fashioned with natural straw
The Natural Garnish — highball with natural straw
01

Authenticity

Before 1888, every straw was a natural straw. Premium beverages deserve the original format — not paper that goes soggy, not plastic that poisons, but the real thing that bartenders and baristas used for centuries.

02

Zero Pollution

Factory straw production contaminates water, emits CO₂, and leaves a persistent waste stream. Our straws are grown, not manufactured. The crop is the product. Nothing is added. Nothing is left behind.

03

Farmer Income

BC farmers need crops that pay better than commodity grain. We supply seed, provide growing guidance, and guarantee purchase of every harvest. Farmers gain a reliable, premium-value crop with a guaranteed buyer.

04

Supply Reliability

The natural straw market has been chronically undersupplied. We are building a vertically integrated supply chain — local BC farms as primary supply, supplemented by regional partners — so buyers never face stockouts.

05

Carbon Negative

The grass crop sequesters carbon as it grows. No factory, no industrial process, no emissions from manufacturing. The existence of our product is a net environmental positive — which almost nothing in the food and beverage supply chain can claim.

06

Community Health

We supply natural straws to Vancouver's shelters and community organizations, reducing disease transmission from shared water vessels. Purpose is not a marketing strategy — it is built into the supply chain.

The Product

The original
drinking straw.

A 4mm hollow grass stem, naturally dried and cut to length. No processing. No additives. No allergens. The same straw placed in every drink from ancient Mesopotamia to the Victorian cocktail bar.

We know our lane — and we own it. Thin drinks, hot or cold. Espresso to Old Fashioned. The mouthfeel is unmatched: smooth, neutral, and completely natural. It holds structure through an entire drink service without softening, splitting, or leaving a taste.

Not for thick smoothies or milkshakes — we leave those to someone else. Our straw does one thing, perfectly.

The Supply Chain

Field to glass.
Nothing in between.

01

Grown in BC

Partner farmers in British Columbia grow the grass crop from seed we supply. The hollow stems develop naturally over the growing season.

02

Harvested & Dried

Stems are cut at peak maturity and naturally dried. No chemicals, no processing, no industrial intervention.

03

Cut & Packed

Dried stems are cut to length — 5" or 8" — and packed in compostable packaging at our BC facility.

04

Served with Pride

Delivered to restaurants, bars, cafes, and hospitality groups across Canada and beyond. From field to glass.

01

Variety Selection

We grow hollow-stemmed rye (Secale cereale) selected for consistent bore diameter and wall thickness. We supply certified seed — you do not source it yourself.

02

Soil & Site

Rye is one of the hardiest cereal grains. It tolerates poor, sandy, or acidic soils where other crops fail. Ideal pH 5.5–7.0. Well-drained fields preferred. BC's interior and Peace Region are well-suited.

03

Seeding

Fall seeding (September–October) for winter rye. Spring seeding (March–April) also viable. Seeding rate: 100–120 kg/ha. Drill seeding at 2–4 cm depth. Minimal inputs required.

04

Growing Season

Winter rye overwinters and matures by late June–July. The hollow stem develops naturally as the plant matures. No irrigation required in most BC regions. Minimal pesticide use — the crop is naturally resilient.

05

Harvest

Harvest at full stem maturity before grain fill is complete — this preserves the hollow bore. Cut at the base, bundle, and windrow for field drying. Timing is critical and covered in detail in the Complete Growing System.

06

Drying & Grading

Stems are naturally dried to below 12% moisture. No kiln required. Grading removes bent, cracked, or undersized stems. We provide grading specifications and accept your entire qualifying harvest.

Want the complete system?

The basics above are a starting point. The Complete Rye Straw Growing System covers every stage in full technical detail — varieties, contracts, equipment, grading, and economics.

Community Purpose

Purpose built
into the supply chain.

We supply natural straws to Vancouver's shelters and community organizations, including DTES Vancouver. Shared water vessels are a vector for disease transmission in shelter environments. A personal straw — compostable, zero-waste — is a simple intervention with real public health impact.

This is not a charity program bolted onto a commercial business. It is the same product, the same supply chain, directed toward the community that needs it most.
