Seaweed-derived plant sprays and soil drenches are transforming how we grow natural grass — producing larger root systems, thicker stems, and a more consistent hollow. This is the science behind a better straw.

We have always grown our natural grass the way it wants to be grown — in the right season, without pesticides. But over the past two seasons we have been working with Just Gerald Seaweed Co. to understand whether seaweed-derived biostimulants — applied as foliar sprays and soil drenches — can produce a measurably better straw stem: wider bore, thicker wall, larger root system, more consistent hollow.
The early results are compelling. We are not ready to publish the full data yet — the Just Gerald Seaweed Co. website is still in development and the formal write-up is being prepared — but the direction is clear. Seaweed biostimulants are not a gimmick. They are a serious agronomic tool, and they are changing what we can grow.
What This Article Will Cover
What Seaweed Biostimulants Do
How kelp-derived cytokinins, auxins, and betaines signal the plant to invest more carbon in root mass and stem wall thickness — and why this matters for a hollow grass stem.
The Just Gerald Seaweed Co. Programme
The specific spray and drench schedule used at our partner farms — timing, concentration, application method — and how it fits into the existing growing calendar.
Measured Outcomes
Stem diameter, wall thickness, hollow bore consistency, and root depth data from the 2024–25 trial plots compared to the control rows. The numbers are encouraging.
What It Means for the Straw
A thicker-walled, wider-bore stem means a stronger straw with better flow characteristics. We will publish the full sensory and structural comparison alongside the agronomic data.

We are finalising the data, the write-up, and the Just Gerald Seaweed Co. website. When all three are ready, this page becomes the full article. In the meantime, wholesale enquiries about the biostimulant programme are welcome.
