Cocktail Straw Sizing Guide: Which Straw for Which Drink

Straw diameter is not an aesthetic choice. It is a functional one. The wrong bore size changes the drinking experience — the flow rate, the mouthfeel, the way the drink arrives on the palate.

Understanding Bore Diameter

Bore diameter — the internal diameter of the straw — determines how much liquid flows per sip. A wider bore delivers more liquid faster. A narrower bore delivers less liquid more slowly, concentrating the flavour experience.

For cocktails and specialty coffee, a narrower bore is almost always preferable. It slows the sip, concentrates the flavour, and prevents the drink from being consumed too quickly. It is the difference between tasting a drink and drinking it.

The 4mm Standard

The 4mm bore is the standard for cocktail and specialty coffee straws. It is narrow enough to slow the sip and concentrate the flavour, but wide enough to handle most drinks without requiring excessive suction.

Our natural natural straws are naturally 4mm — the hollow stem of the natural grass plant grows to approximately this diameter. This is not a manufacturing decision. It is what the plant produces.

Length Considerations

Standard cocktail straws are 14–15cm — long enough for a rocks glass or coupe, short enough to not overwhelm the presentation. Our natural straws are cut to this standard length.

For tall drinks — highballs, Collins glasses, hurricane glasses — a longer straw (20–23cm) is appropriate. We offer extended lengths for high-volume operators on request.

The Natural Variation Advantage

Natural grass straws have slight variations in bore diameter — typically 3.5mm to 4.5mm. This is not a defect. It is a feature. The slight variation means each straw is unique, which reinforces the handcrafted, natural story of the product.
